Which Side of the Tax War Are You On?

Which Side of the Tax War Are You On?

With the November presidential election rapidly approaching, there are all kinds of issues creating heated debates on both sides of the aisle. However, the one that will be at the forefront of this next election is how to fuel the economy, create jobs and put people back to work, and with that discussion comes the issue of whether taxes should be raised or lowered.

A good visual of where the two sides stand and what job growth in correlation to top marginal income tax rates has looked like over the last forty years with seven different presidents is provided in the below infographic posted in late 2011 by Jane Hendrick on G+, a Gerson, Lehrman Group community.

Do You Want To See Process Improvements in Your Tax Department?

You are not alone. Like most people in corporate tax departments today, there is mounting pressure to complete a growing amount of work more efficiently with fewer resources and less risk.   This will continue to be a struggle for tax departments in coming years and explains why at last month’s Corptax conference John Fiore and Ann Giffels from Ryan and their clients, Abott Laboratories and Bausch and Lomb had standing room only when they presented a case study, Process Improvement Calendar: What to Do & When to Do It.

10 Things You Need to Know About Unclaimed Property

10 Things You Need to Know About Unclaimed Property

If I rated the sessions I attended at the Chicago Tax Club’s recent Fall Seminar, I would have to say the most fascinating (bet you don’t often hear that word to describe a tax session!) was SOX Controls Issues & Much More, a panel discussion led by Michael Giannettino of PwC, Matthew Chenowth of True Partners Consulting and Robert Peters of Duff & Phelps.  I picked this session to attend since our Tax Calendar product supports all of the state due dates for Unclaimed Property (UP) filings, and l wanted to learn more about the topic.  I was not disappointed, as the three panelists shared their insight into why unclaimed property has become such a big issue for corporate tax departments.

Who Else in Tax Wants to Learn About Transfer Pricing?

Who Else in Tax Wants to Learn About Transfer Pricing?

I have never worked in an area of corporate tax that required me to know very much about transfer pricing.  However, I do know it is a hot topic among tax professionals in corporate tax departments, particularly multinationals. So, several weeks ago at the Vertex Exchange corporate tax conference in Vegas, I decided to attend Basic Transfer Pricing Concepts, presented by George Salis, Principal Sr. Tax Compliance Analyst, at Vertex, so I could learn more.  To my surprise, the class was very well attended by tax professionals who had either recently found transfer pricing part of their daily corporate tax responsibilities, seen their companies go through acquisitions that now made them multi-nationals, or experienced turnover and assumed new responsibilities.  George did an excellent job of breaking down the transfer pricing fundamentals with a blend of formal definitions and personal insight.

Corptax Conference Day Three Update

Corptax Conference Day Three Update

Yesterday concluded Day 3 of the Corptax User’s Conference in San Antonio. While attendees were starting to slow down a little, there was no shortage of good sessions to attend. Kelley and I have had a few favorites during the conference, including a Tax Process Improvement Calendar session presented by John Fiore and Anne Giffels from Ryan alongside their clients from Abott Laboratories and Bausch and Lomb. Another really great session, Tax Examination Hot Topics, presented by Victoria Sherlock from KPMG, kicked off the morning yesterday. Look for more blog posts from Kelley and me in coming weeks on things we have learned here.
