10 Things You Need to Know About Unclaimed Property
If I rated the sessions I attended at the Chicago Tax Club’s recent Fall Seminar, I would have to say the most fascinating (bet you don’t often hear that word to describe a tax session!) was SOX Controls Issues & Much More, a panel discussion led by Michael Giannettino of PwC, Matthew Chenowth of True Partners Consulting and Robert Peters of Duff & Phelps. I picked this session to attend since our Tax Calendar product supports all of the state due dates for Unclaimed Property (UP) filings, and l wanted to learn more about the topic. I was not disappointed, as the three panelists shared their insight into why unclaimed property has become such a big issue for corporate tax departments.

I have never worked in an area of corporate tax that required me to know very much about transfer pricing. However, I do know it is a hot topic among tax professionals in corporate tax departments, particularly multinationals. So, several weeks ago at the Vertex Exchange corporate tax conference in Vegas, I decided to attend Basic Transfer Pricing Concepts, presented by George Salis, Principal Sr. Tax Compliance Analyst, at Vertex, so I could learn more. To my surprise, the class was very well attended by tax professionals who had either recently found transfer pricing part of their daily corporate tax responsibilities, seen their companies go through acquisitions that now made them multi-nationals, or experienced turnover and assumed new responsibilities. George did an excellent job of breaking down the transfer pricing fundamentals with a blend of formal definitions and personal insight.

Yesterday concluded Day 3 of the Corptax User’s Conference in San Antonio. While attendees were starting to slow down a little, there was no shortage of good sessions to attend. Kelley and I have had a few favorites during the conference, including a Tax Process Improvement Calendar session presented by John Fiore and Anne Giffels from Ryan alongside their clients from Abott Laboratories and Bausch and Lomb. Another really great session, Tax Examination Hot Topics, presented by Victoria Sherlock from KPMG, kicked off the morning yesterday. Look for more blog posts from Kelley and me in coming weeks on things we have learned here.

Twelve hundred attendees from 350 companies arrived in San Antonio for yesterday’s kickoff of the Corptax User’s Conference. In the opening session, David Shea, CEO at CorpTax, challenged the audience to think about how to do things differently this week. He emphasized the fact that this week is all about users helping users. The highlight of Shea’s opening remarks came when he announced an agreement had been reached for Corporation Service Company, a leading global business and financial solutions provider, to acquire CorpTax and Tax Compliance, Inc. (TCI). He quelled everyone’s fears by assuring them that the vision and direction for the products would not change.

If you aren’t attending Thomson’s ONESOURCE Global User Conference at the Fontainebleau in Miami, you may have missed what kids are saying. You can’t believe it, right? When they grow up….they want to be in TAX?!?!
I was not in attendance yesterday for the kickoff but followed day one of the conference on Twitter (#ONESOURCEuc), expecting to hear some interesting tax info and expand my network. What I got was a good laugh when buzz was generated around the “When I Grow Up” video they showcased. There was so much talk about the video that within the hour, they had the video posted to YouTube.

When I was in Chicago last week, I got to check out the view from the skywalk at the old Sears Tower, which was truly amazing, but I was in town to attend the Chicago Tax Club Fall Seminar in Rosemont, Illinois. In addition to manning the Red Moon Solutions booth, I was able to attend five of the seminar sessions. I know the non-tax world (and sometimes the tax world) thinks tax is pretty boring, but I always find it interesting to learn what is going on in the varied aspects of tax. So, I chose the audit and unclaimed property sessions since they relate to our eTaxCalendar and AuditRoom products.
