Attitude is Everything…Especially During Tax Season
Last summer, my oldest son, Garrett, joined a U9 Academy soccer team to work on his skills and start transitioning toward more competitive play. Needless to say, we have spent countless hours at the soccer field for practice and traveled every Saturday to compete against local teams in our area. One of the things that has shocked me throughout this experience is the bad attitude of some of the kids on opposing teams and even more shockingly, some of the parents. Regardless of how my son plays or whether his team wins or loses, my husband and I have always tried to impress upon him the importance of a good attitude. In fact, we have gone so far as to tell him if he doesn’t exhibit a positive attitude and good sportsmanship, we will personally walk out on the field and take him off.

Historically, the IT guys or gals at most companies were responsible for supporting and keeping up electronic communications throughout the organization, including servers, computers, printers and telephones. These were the folks you went to when your computer wouldn’t boot up, and you had to get that final tax return finished and out the door. They were the ones you called when the printer jammed and no else seemed to have any idea how to fix it. They came to your rescue when the projector didn’t work or the phone had no dial tone in the conference room right before your meeting was about to start. They were your friends, right? You were happy to see them.

Right before I leave for the day, I will typically hop online and check my RSS feeds and social media sites to see what has been going on for the day that I might have missed. Yesterday, I had the good fortune of running across a video that Accounting Today had posted on their Facebook page. It was a pretty good laugh for a long Monday.
Anyone that has ever worked in accounting, or tax for that matter, or has worked at a Big 4 or in a similar type of environment will get a laugh out of this one and will certainly be able to relate. Enjoy!

What are some of your New Year’s Resolutions for 2012? As usual this year, I have been hearing lots of folks telling me that they are going to get back in shape, and/or are planning to lose those unwanted ten or twenty pounds. Others tell me they are going to do something “risky” this year, something on their bucket list or to learn a brand new skill. What are your resolutions for this coming year?
A friend of mine just shared this video with me. I must have missed this episode of “The Office” which is depicted in the video. It cracked me up, so I thought I would share it with all of you. It is worth a gander.

It’s that time of year again. Corporate tax departments are abuzz. Tax season is in full swing, and tax professionals are scurrying to get everything done while working long hours. Excel spreadsheets are being re-worked. Work papers and documentation are gone over with a fine tooth comb. Entire forests are being destroyed, as reams of paper capture tax return after tax return. There aren’t enough hours in the day to get all of the work done. Stress is at an all-time high.
The bad news is I can’t make all of that work disappear. The good news is I have come across a few applications/tools that may be able to help you work more efficiently, or at a minimum, help reduce some of that stress.

So, the New Year has come and passed. As has been the case for the last several years, I felt uninspired to come up with any New Year’s resolutions. It is not because I am lazy. And, it is certainly not because there isn’t a long laundry list of things I can do to improve my personal life, my career or my contribution to society.
I haven’t always been like this. I used to make resolutions, like “I’m going to exercise for an hour every day”, or “I’m going to ignore my e-mail for two hours every day, so I can be more productive”. These sound good, right? The problem is they felt like they lasted a lifetime.
