What Does Tax Season Have To Do with Groundhog’s Day?
Today is none other than Groundhog’s Day. Those of you enduring the massive winter storm sweeping across the country this week most likely rolled out of bed hoping and praying that the groundhog did not see his shadow. For me, I live in Florida, so it was more about completing my son’s homework assignment. If you watched or read the news, you by now know that the groundhog did not see his shadow, signifying an end to this winter madness and the onset of an early Spring.
But, as we stood in front of the television this morning waiting for the groundhog to pop his nose out of the ground, I couldn’t help but laugh when I thought about Bill Murray’s 1993 comedy, Groundhog Day, and its similarities to tax season. In the movie, Bill Murray plays a burned out weatherman assigned to cover the Groundhog Day festivities in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Upon completing his assignment, he heads home only to find himself waking up every morning and reliving the events of February 2nd. Only Bill Murray is aware that he is experiencing the same day over and over again. Below is a short-clip from the movie:
How many of you can relate to this feeling during tax season? You grind through returns and filings, long hours and stress only to wake up and do it over and over again….for months at a time. So on Red Whine Wednesday, I am whining (or rather laughing) about how similar tax season is to the movie Groundhog Day. I got a good laugh this morning, and I thought tax professionals out there would, too. So…happy Groundhog’s Day and happy Tax Season!
